AMARI funded for second phase
The African Mental Health Research Initiative phase II (AMARI-II) is one of the 14 grantees under the Developing Excellence in Leadership, Training, and Science in Africa phase II (DELTAS Africa II). DELTAS Africa II was launched on March 14, 2023 in Nairobi, Kenya. The DELTAS Africa II initiative is being implemented by the Science for Africa Foundation (SFA) with the support of Wellcome and the UK Foreign Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO).
AMARI-II builds on the initial AMARI-I which ran from 2015 – 2022 and continues under the leadership of Prof Dixon Chibanda. Speaking at the DELTAS Africa II launch, Prof Chibanda said, “AMARI-II aims to shift the centre of gravity in global mental health (GMH) by ensuring that African scientists become leaders in GMH research, training and implementation. AMARI-II will be guided by earlier work from AMARI-I which revealed critical areas required for sustainable engagement such as involvement of policy makers, identifying resource sharing opportunities and establishing sustainable training programmes within African institutions.”
AMARI-II sees the expansion of the AMARI consortium from four to six African universities. The two new additions are; University of Ghana, and University of Zambia, whilst the traditional African institutions are; Addis Ababa University, University of Cape Town, University of Ghana, University of Malawi, University of Zambia, and University of Zimbabwe. Two UK institutions namely King’s College London, and London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine completes the consortium.
AMARI-II will continue to build capacity in African mental health research through the support of fellows at Masters, PhD, and Post-doctoral level with key focus on implementation science.
