Responsibilities

The Licensed Professional Mental Health Counselor (LPMHC) is a member of the Primary Care-Mental Health Integration (PC-MHI) team assigned to provide collaborative care at the Kansas City VA Medical Center (KCVA), Community-Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOCs), or Honor Annex. Incumbent provides the full range of services as an integral member of the co-located primary care integration team, including psychological assessment, individual psychotherapy, psycho-educational groups; and assists the team in the clinical management of their patients by providing psychological expertise to the medical staff. The incumbent participates in the professional activities of the Mental Health Service and the Medical Center and these activities may include, but are not necessarily limited to: administrative committees of Mental Health and/or the Medical Center, quality assurance/improvement activities, and treatment/program evaluation.

Clinical responsibilities (90% time): The incumbent will provide a full range of psychological assessment services and diagnoses mental disorders, particularly for complex medical patients. Provides brief, focused therapy and behavioral intervention services. Educates patients, family members, and significant others on the treatment and services that assists individuals in recovery. Provides on-site, co-located consultation to staff within the Primary Care clinics and community-based outpatient clinics. Functions independently as a member of the Kansas City VA Medical Staff, with full clinical privileges. Assumes complete professional responsibility for his/her clinical assessment findings, patient care decisions, and documentation.

Administrative responsibilities (10% time): The incumbent will assist in the design, development, and implementation of clinical programs for a team of treatment providers. Adheres to all established operational and professional policies and procedures. Assists in the execution of ongoing program evaluation utilizing a care management information system, and data-driven quality improvement projects to monitor the effectiveness of the clinical program. Facilitates liaisons with other health care programs in order to effectively coordinate services.Complies with national and local performance measures, including timely health care screening and completion of clinical reminders for all patients. Complies with all CPRS documentation procedures, including timeliness standards for documentation and proper patient check out procedures (e.g., entering diagnostic and procedure codes). Attends regular Mental Health Service meetings, PC-MHI meetings, Medical Staff meetings, and complies with all national, local, and professional policies.

Work Schedule: Generally Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm, with coverage on weekends, and/or adjusted tours as needed to ensure quality care to veterans. Qualifications

Basic Requirements United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English language proficiency (written and spoken): Social workers must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Handbook 5005, Part II, chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3j. Physical standards: All applicants must meet the physical standards for the position. A physical examination prior to employment may be required. License, Registration, Certification Requirements: Persons hired or reassigned to LPMHC positions in the GS-0101 series in VHA must hold a full, current, and unrestricted license to independently practice as a Licensed Professional Mental Health Counselor, which includes diagnosis and treatment. NOTE: It is VHA policy that a LPMHC who does not yet have a license that allows independent practice must be supervised by a licensed independent practitioner of the same discipline who is a VA staff member and who has access to the electronic health record. Education: Have a master's degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling; Clinical Rehabilitation Counseling; Clinical Mental Health Counseling and Clinical Rehabilitation Counseling; or a related field, from a program accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP).
