Objectives

  • Run a voluntary association of social workers and psychiatrists for the purpose of assisting and treating people with mental health conditions irrespective of caste, colour or creed
  • To provide outdoor, indoor and domiciliary treatment, including those with substance use disorders
  • To establish in Kolkata and elsewhere centres and branches for expansion of the activities of the association

Mission

The Mission of ANTARA is to alleviate suffering of people experiencing mental health conditions including addiction and alcoholism, especially destitute persons. ANTARA shall strive to do this with love, patience and compassion.

Summary of relevant work: 

The 8 Acre campus comprises a Residential Treatment Centre including 200 hospital beds and homes for 50 patients who have no other place to go. We have an Occupational Therapy Centre and Vocational Training units, Outpatient Departments, Libraries, Reading Rooms, Recreational Centres, Residential Quarters and Community Kitchen. 

A Mix of Work and Aesthetic Therapy is used for holistic development of the patient.

Some of the recreational activities which are undertaken at Antara include: Drama, Mime, Discussions, Debates, Dance, Music, Instruments, Gardening, Handicraft Designing and Card Designing. In addition Antara has 4 Satellite Clinics to take care of patients who find it difficult to reach Antara’s main campus.

A Team of qualified Psychiatrists and Nurses work with Antara. Antara takes it upon itself to ensure that any person knocking on its door for help does not go back empty handed. Over 40,000 patients have been treated in 2019 by Antara. The primary goal of all the activities above is for the patient’s rejoining of society.
