The Centre for Mental Health and Community Research is the only centre in the Republic of Ireland undertaking applied, interdisciplinary mental health and well-being research across the lifespan and in a community context.

Mission statement

The Centre for Mental Health and Community Research (CMHCR) (formerly known as the Mental Health and Social Research Unit) was established in Maynooth University in 2008 by Professor Sinead McGilloway.

Our mission is to research, innovate and transform the mental health and well-being of communities. Overarching themes and innovation relate to evaluation, early intervention and prevention, health services research and implementation science, focusing on child and adult mental health and well-being and vulnerable & disadvantaged groups. 

We are a vibrant research group/community conducting high-quality, community-engaged and often cutting edge research on innovative mental  health and well-being services/supports/interventions. Our projects and programmes straddle a wide range of practice- and policy-relevant subject areas of national and international importance. The centre also offers a stimulating learning environment for, and leadership in, the training/mentoring of doctoral, postgraduate and early career researchers.

Our key research objectives are:

  • Assess and contribute to the development, implementation and evaluation of mental health and social care services in community- based settings
  • Strengthen evidence, awareness, knowledge/information and research on mental health
  • Contribute to policy and practice, especially in relation to the implementation of early intervention and prevention strategies/interventions for mental health and well-being.
