Early in 2020 the Taskforce on Mental Health in Kenya submitted its report to the President. Amongst other things, the report recommended that mental wellbeing be prioritized. However, given the majority of Kenyans associate mental health issues with negative narratives and stigma, the Coalition for Action for Preventive Mental Health strongly feels that by investing in grassroots community prevention and awareness raising, Kenya can employ an approach that builds on Indigenous cultural resources maximizing on adapting innovative and preventive models from other experiences. Such a holistic approach would enhance mental wellbeing, resilience and holistic healing at all levels of society in Kenya.
CAPMHK is a coalition of organizations that work on preventive and protective initiatives in mental health at community level. The coalition conducts mental health advocacy, fundraising, training, research, networking and facilitates partnerships for its members. In November 2020, CAPMH ran a petition calling for the national government and country governments to invest in mental and wellbeing.
- The petition also called on the National Treasury and Planning to allocate more funds to community-based mental health services and strengthen infrastructure for prevention and early intervention.
- Their third call to action was to call on national and county governments to invest and support the implementation of community-based prevention and early intervention as part of holistic healing in all the 47 counties.
