International Consortium for Health Outcomes Measurement (ICHOM)

International Consortium for Health Outcomes Measurement (ICHOM)

ICHOM is an international non-profit organisation. Our mission is to unlock the potential of value-based health care by defining global Standard Sets of outcome measures that really matter to people and by driving adoption and reporting of these measures worldwide.

Mission statement

Development of Standard Sets: We bring together patient representatives, leading physicians and registry leaders to prioritise a core set of outcomes for different medical conditions. These are published in our open-access Standard Sets, which hospitals use to guide the outcomes they should measure.

Implementation: We provide practical advice and workshops for health care providers, so they can start measuring outcomes listed in our Standard Sets as a business as usual exercise.

Benchmarking: We help healthcare providers compare outcomes with peers, in order to identify best practices to improve outcomes for patients globally and drive quality improvement.

Summary of relevant work

We bring together international and multi-disciplinary teams of service-users, healthcare professionals, and researchers to define outcomes that matter most to those who live with different conditions.

These teams develop recommendations of 10-15 core outcomes and measures that healthcare providers can reliably implement. Outcome measurement in routine clinical practice supports and enables:

  1. Improved shared decision-making
  2. Focused quality improvement efforts
  3. International benchmarking

ICHOM has completed two mental health Standard Sets; depression and anxiety in adults, and dementia. We are excited to have recently commenced work on four further mental health Standard Sets which are due to launch in 2019:

  1. Anxiety, depression, OCD and PTSD in children and young people
  2. Disorders related to substance use and addictive behaviours
  3. Psychotic disorders
  4. Personality disorders

All of ICHOM's work is freely available to promote global adoption and we hope the development of these Standard Sets will support organisations worldwide to deliver person-centred services that focus on the outcomes that matter most to people.

Key partners

As a non-profit, ICHOM works closely with a variety of partners, who through their financial support, enable us to create and maintain our Standard Sets, provide training on value-based health care and facilitate learning between health care providers worldwide. Our full list of partners can be found on our website.
