Mental Health and Wellness Initiative

Mental Health and Wellness Initiative (MHWI) is a non-profit and non-governmental organization aimed at creating awareness on mental health in Nigeria.

Mission statement

To sensitize the public and address prevailing challenges in vulnerable communities through effective collaborations, adoption of innovative approaches and using the right advocacy to solving problems arising from mental health and wellness in Nigeria.

Our vision is to achieve generational change in the psyche of the populace by the year 2030 through sustained community- wide advocacy against substance abuse, managing depression and related mental health disorders and the provision of quality health guidance in tandem with the sustainable development goals of the United Nations.

We focus on the overall mental health of the society, driving the right advocacy across the most vulnerable communities. We rely on available statistics to respond to prevailing mental health disorders in communities, public institutions and campuses. Our service scope is not limited by age, religion, tribe and other barriers. We provide post-trauma support, provide counselling and support to victims of domestic violence, people traumatized by communal crisis and other related mental health disorders.

Summary of relevant work

MHWI flagship program was an advocacy visit to the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camp in Durumi, Abuja. The Durumi camp is home to over 300 women and children internally displaced by Boko Haram onslaught in the North-Eastern states of Borno, Yobe and Adamawa. The visit gave us an opportunity to interact with women and children at the camp. Other programs include; new year celebration with hope survival orphans, sparing thought for Tawari community, online mental health sensitization sessions amidst covid-19 pandemic etc.
