UERJ’s mission is based on principles of equality and plurality, and the university was the first in the state of Rio de Janeiro to focus on exercising citizenship.
In 60 years of existence, UERJ has taught disciplinary and technical content to many generations of students. Its professors are committed to both the professional and intellectual development of their students - enhancing their holistic formation beyond academia.
Several areas of knowledge are covered by the university’s 97 undergraduate courses, 346 research groups, and nearly 500 extension projects and cultural activities, which bring together teachers, administrative workers, students, and the community.
