Suicide Prevention India Foundation (SPIF)

Suicide Prevention India Foundation (SPIF)

Suicide Prevention India Foundation (SPIF) is a non-profit involved in the suicide prevention movement in India. SPIF views suicide as a public health crisis and aims to increase awareness and promote community led engagement in suicide prevention. We use a WHO-recommended suicide prevention strategy called ‘Gatekeeper Training’ as a preventive measure to enable timely detection and intervention for those in emotional distress.

Mission statement

Suicide Prevention India Foundation’s mission is to reduce suicides through raising awareness and leveraging the power of the community using a WHO-recommended suicide prevention strategy, called Gatekeeper training.

Summary of relevant work

SPIF follows a three-pronged approach of “Advocacy” “Action” and “Research” in our work with suicide prevention.

We carry out direct action aimed at reducing suicides through Gatekeeper training, a WHO recommended suicide prevention strategy.  We tackle stigma through awareness talks, events and workshops. We build communities of suicide survivors and suicide loss for support, to shed light on lived realities and normalize conversations around suicide.

Additionally, SPIF intends to produce original research to understand various psychosocial factors driving suicides in India across various demographic groups to further inform policymakers and community level interventions.
