After retirement acquired knowledge & skills of counselling and guiding persons in distress. I have been volunteering for Schizophrenia Awareness Association, Pune, India, and made best use of corporate experience in developing this NGO into an effective and organised unit of community service. Was editor of their quarterly EKALAVYA, facilitator for self-help groups of both, the persons coping with mental illness and their caregivers. I have made presentations on behalf of this NGO at different seminars on issues of affected families, their needs, their rights and their training. Have designed posters for creating awareness about mental illness, for removal of myths and mis-conceptions, for restoring hope and enabling efforts. Have also been contributing ideas in the rehabilitation and recovery of mentally ill persons at SAA's rehab center and which have helped in restoring skills, self-esteem, confidence and ability to earn some pocket money out of the sale of hand-made items by these seekers of well-being. That has left me grateful for the opportunities to serve the community.
