Brief Biography: 

Joy Noel Baumgartner, PhD, MSSW, is a public health researcher with expertise in both quantitative and qualitative methods, frequently applied to low-resource settings.  She is currently Associate Director of the Duke Global Health Institute (DGHI) Evidence Lab at Duke University in Durham, NC.  The DGHI Evidence Lab conducts, and builds local capacity to conduct, rigorous evaluation research in low-resource settings.  Joy Noel's areas of expertise include adapting and evaluating psychosocial interventions for mental disorders in low-resource settings as well as developing and testing health interventions to meet the reproductive health needs of adolescents and women.  She has worked with partners globally with particular long-term collaborations in Tanzania and South Africa.  Joy Noel has a master’s degree in social work, a PhD in maternal and child health, and postdoctoral training in psychiatric epidemiology focused on global mental health.
