Brief Biography: 

Julian Eaton, a British psychiatrist, is Mental Health Director for CBM Global. His work involves engaging local actors to strengthen mental health systems, develop policy and legislation and guide implementation. He has published on issues relating to system strengthening, scaling up mental health services in low income countries and empowerment of service users.

He lived for almost 15 years in West Africa, in Nigeria and Togo, from where he worked in countries across the region. Since 2015 he has been studying for a PhD, working with MHIN, and acting as Assistant Professor, at London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

Call for stories (closed): We want to hear your experiences with delivering mental health support during the COVID-19 pandemic

The Mental Health Innovation Network, in collaboration with the Department of Mental Health and Substance Use at the World Health Organization, is calling for submission of global experiences of mental health and social care providers involved in mental health support to people during the COVID-19 outbreak either people affected by the outbreak or people with pre-existing mental health conditions or psychosocial disabilities.

Mental Health in Africa: Innovation and Investment Conference Recording

This landmark conference hosted by the Royal African Society, the Centre for Global Mental Health and the Mental Health Innovation Network (held at Wellcome Trust) highlighted current innovations in Africa and the need for real commitments on investment, awareness, policy and implementation. On 20 November, nearly 200 experts, advocates, researchers and practitioners from across Africa and the UK gathered in London to discuss how to bring these new approaches to those who need them. We are excited to be able to provide recordings of the lectures, panel speeches and innovation presentation that took place by African leaders at this event.

This blog was co-authored by Dr Julian Eaton (Co-Director of the Centre for Global Mental Health at LSHTM and Mental Health Director at CBM International), Dr Nicholas Westcott (Director of the Royal African Society) and Prof Stanley Okolo (Director-General of the West Africa Health Organisation) ahead of two major conferences taking place in London and Burkina Faso focusing on Mental Health in Africa. Entitled “Mental Health in Africa: Innovation and Investment”, the London conference will be hosted by the Wellcome Trust on Wednesday, 20 November.
